John Berger - Ways of Seeing.

Whilst myself and the rest of my class are expected to publish these weekly blogs we've also been involved in some weekly readings. The benefits of this is that our ability to understand and deconstruct an image will grow profoundly which will be vital when we as artists begin to produce our own bodies of work.

This weeks reading was:

John Berger - Ways of Seeing

My initial thoughts of the reading were somewhat ignorant in that I didn't take the time to understand what Berger was trying to convey, I simply questioned his actions with confusion and immaturity. Nevertheless as our seminar proceeded my understanding on the subject grew steadily.

What I found from the reading was that the images held a greater emphasis without the text, I often find that the introduction of text can alter my opinion or interpretation of a piece of art so it was interesting having the opportunity to simply glance how and why the images were put together.

Adding to this I found his views on feminism were fascinating as they answered many of questions associated with feminist art during the 1900's. He concluded that 'Men look at women. Women watch themselves being looked at'. I.e art within the western world already presented the unequal relationship between men and women which was present throughout society.
